According to an old Eastern parable, two beggars formed a symbolic relationship: one was blind and the other was born without legs, The blind man was strong enough to carry the legless man on his back. He became the legs for the lame man. In return, the lame man became the eyes for the blind one. Clinging to each other, they both benefited.
Dr. Alvin Pouissant, the noted psychiatrist, was asked what he would do if he felt a nervous breakdown coming on. He answered, “I would go down the street and find someone needy and immediately seek to help him,” General Fred A Gorden, commandant of cadets, United States Military Academy at West Point, concurred. He stated, “We are on the wrong track when we think of friendship as something to get, rather that something to give. The world need more warm hearts and fewer hot heads.”
“To love others makes us happy,” says Kenny “BabyFace” Edmonds, one-half of Black America’s hottest song-writing duo. His equally talented partner, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, couldn’t agree more. “Love is the glue,” he replies, “that holds friendship together.” Friendship is built upon love. You can say that a true and loyal friendship is an exceedingly rare and wonderful thing – like a happy marriage or a successful partnership. It needs attention, care, guarding, and above all, it needs to be needed.
